Over the last weeks, the three seismic stations on El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, registered low frequency volcanic tremors in the south of the island, according to Spain's Instituto Geographico Nacional (IGN).
Last week, IGN confirmed that an underwater eruption was occurring about three miles off the southern coastline of El Hierro.
The pre-operational version of the GMES Emergency Management service powered by the SAFER project has been activated today by the Spanish authorities in order to cover the volcanic eruption.
